Who Am I?

Hey.

I'm a married chick with no kids, a dog and two cats.

I like to sing, and I am ok at it. For the life of me, I don't know why I don't do more of it. I play the guitar, and I am pretty awful at it. Music is one of those things that I love, but can't seem to apply myself. Stuff like that we file in perpetual hobby. As much as I've been encouraged to make it a career (there was that one time...), I just can't do it. I also like to read books, and spend countless hours on the internet reading comics and looking at memes.

For my career, I basically kept doing that job (in one form or another) I had when I graduated from college. You know, the one I lucked into because of someone I knew at the time. I graduated with a degree in Radio, TV, and Film, but see, that's kind of a hard business to break into. The other thing is, I started really liking my accidental career. I work in higher education, in IT, as a Business and information analyst. I started in Business and Finance. Crazy, but the job really grew on me. I like students, I like helping people achieve their goals, and I like being able to buy coffee on campus before work sometimes. I also have had the chance to meet some really, really smart people, and that is probably the biggest benefit of all.

What I've learned from my job is that you never, ever, ever stop learning. Sure, you may take a break for a while, and your job may suck up all of your free time, but you should always approach life as a student. When you start thinking you've got everything down, that's when life stops being interesting. You might as well run over to the mortuary and start looking for an end-of-life plan, because you're pretty much dead already.

I’m also a person who pursues compassion for all living things, and I avoid animal products as a result or outflow of that. It’s not 100%, but I do what is practical. I’ve got extensive experience in extreme weight gain and loss, dieting, and maintaining healthy habits (both success and less-success). I have ADHD, which is a neuro-developmental brain disorder characterized by inhibited executive function. I also have immune thrombocytopenia purpura, a blood disorder of which low platelets is the chief symptom. I’m also an agnostic atheist. I respect individual rights to practice religion and categorically oppose religious beliefs dictating the rules of civil society at large (this is just plain practical, given the extreme variety of religious belief and the conflicts that follow). I support equal rights for all, believe gender is a spectrum, accept an understanding of the world informed by critical race theory, the concept of privilege, and systemic oppression, and I think education and health care should be decoupled from socioeconomic status through appropriate and socially/publicly funded public programs. I think rich people should pay a fair share of taxes, and by fair, I mean proportional to their wealth. I don’t think corporations should be viewed as people, and I think they should also be taxed fairly and held to standards for fair labor and compensation. Women should have a right to choose, guided as needed by medical professionals and medical ethics, when and how to grow and carry a fetus, and for the vast majority of cases, that choice should rest with her and her medical provider.
